Former Custer swimming coach Henderson dies

George Henderson, Milwaukee Custer High School's first swimming coach and athletic director, died Thursday of cancer.  He was 78.

After two years as an assistant football coach at Pulaski, Henderson was hired by Custer when the school opened in 1955.  He gave up his athletic director's title in 1962, when he was briefly recalled to the Air Force because of the Cuban missile crisis, but remained on as swimming coach through the 1970s.  He retired from teaching in 1985.

Henderson swam at the University of Washington for two years, then joined the Air Force and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel.  After World War II, he was captain of the swimming team at southern Methodist University.

Henderson is survived by his wife, Jeanne, sons Jim and Bill, and daughter, Patrice.
