John J Vancos, 1922-2005

John J Vankos, age 83, of Rhinelander, died August 3, 2005 at Friendly Village Nursing Home.  He was born February 3, 1922 in Rhinelander, the son of John Sr. and Anna(Zugel) Vancos.

He is survived by two sisters, Theresa and Dorothy of Rhinelander; nephews, Bill(Joy) and Denny; nieces, Roberta(Jack) Monty, Marge(Corky) Stoxen, Mary(Jim) Thoms, and Sue Vancos, as well as a sister-in-law, Dorothy Vancos.  He is further survived by grand-nephews and nieces, cousins snd his lifelong friends, Don Deau, Clyde Fish, and Tony Paris.  John was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Matt and Tony; and three sisters, Mary, Ann, and Catherine.

John graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1942 and from Ferris State University in 1950.  He served his country during WWII in the Air Force, serving in the battles of Normandy and the Central Europe Air Offense.  

He taught Business Education classes at Custer High School in Milwaukee for 25 years.  He was also the school golf coach during which they won two city championships.

He was a lifelong parisioner of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rhinelander and the knights of Columbus as well as the Rhinelander Country Club.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 5, 2005 at 11:00am at Nativity of Our Lord Parish at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rhinelander with Father John Gerritts officiating.  Interment will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.  Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Friday morning.  Hilebrand-Darton-Russ Funeral Home, (715) 365-4343 has been entrusted with the arrangements.  Share memories of John online at hildebrandfh.com
