Richard Hinchcliffe, 92, of Elm Grove, WI, died on Thursday, October 19th, 2023, at the Heritage Elm Grove, where he was in the Memory Care Unit. He was born December 7th, 1930, in Burlington, WI, to Walter and Florence (Finck) Hinchcliffe, and grew up on the farm near Kansasville, WI, with his parents and older brother, John.
Dick went to Burlington H.S., where he excelled in football and basketball, graduating in 1948. During those years he also played baseball in Kansasville.
He then attended UW-La Crosse studying to become a physical education teacher. While there he played football and basketball until knee injuries ended his playing days. Upon graduating in 1952, he joined the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed at Kirtland AF Base, New Mexico, until the time of his Honorable Discharge in 1956. During his years there, Dick played a lot of baseball on the Base team, as well as performing his duties as a Medical Supply Specialist. At this time, Dick was hired by the Milwaukee Public Schools and was assigned to Custer H.S. where he taught physical education and coached football for 16 years. After earning his Masters in Guidance from UW-M, Dick moved into the Guidance Department. He also made the change from Head Football Coach to Head Basketball Coach, where he had several successful teams, winning the Conference Title in 1976. He continued in Guidance and coaching, as well as teaching Drivers' Education, until his retirement in June of 1992.
Dick was involved with several community activities and services in Elm Grove over the years. He ushered at Community United Methodist Church from 1966 until 2016, and was Head Usher at the early service. He belonged to several professional associations in education and coaching, as well as the Milwaukee Guidance Association, one year acting as president. Dick umpired both baseball and softball leagues. He was a member of the Old Timers' Baseball Association.
In the Village of Elm Grove, Dick was on the Park and Recreation Committee from 1981 to 2005. In 2005, he completed the Citizens Police Academy and also received the Volunteer Award for 14 years of service. Dick enjoyed many years playing tennis, joining the EG Tennis Club. He was an officer in the club, captained several men's teams, and was the Men's Teams Coordinator.
Richard is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joan (Barwind) Hinchcliffe, and his three children: Deborah (Jerry Sanders), Richard, Jr., and Michael (Susie) Hinchcliffe; his eight grandchildren: Kelsey (Greg) Hess, Erica Hinchcliffe, Ryan (Alyssa) Hinchcliffe, Renee, Luke, Zachary, Andrew, and Annika Hinchcliffe. He had two great granddaughters: Haley and Kyla Hess.
Richard was preceded in death by wife, Barbara (Badenoch) Hinchcliffe, his parents, and his brother, John.
Visitation will take place on Friday, October 27th, 2023, at Community United Methodist Church, 14700 Watertown Plank Road, Elm Grove WI, from 10 A.M. until time of Memorial Service at 11 A.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Alzheimer's Association of WI or Community United Methodist Church would be greatly appreciated.
