I didn't know John very well, but now and then we'd have a brief, pleasant chat.  Somewhere along our paths, I realized that he had been absent from school for some time-maybe a week or more.  When he came back, I asked him what had happened.  He said he was in the hospital, and he had been diagnosed with diabetes.  I didn't know much about it at the time, but I knew enough to be shocked and concerned.  I could see both of those things in his own eyes as well.  I think he fought a valiant fight against a ravaging disease for most of his life, and he's had my respect ever since that day, so long ago.  May God bless his family.
